The term Business Intelligence, which is sometimes used as a synonym for competitive intelligence, aims to support better business decision-making. That being said, I am always seeking additional “intelligence” that, among other things, reduces operational risks, increases efficiency and effectiveness, or provides opportunities for expansion, which by the way, is exactly what I received last week.

A few short days ago WikiLeaks published a cache of what can best be described as sensitive and embarrassing U.S. diplomatic cables. Previously, WikiLeaks published thousands of secret and classified documents relating to both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. WikiLeaks is now threatening to release 10,000 or so documents from a U.S. banking institution as well as sensitive documents pertaining to several multi-national corporations in the coming months.

There is little doubt that some kind of financial reform needs to take place on Wall Street. However, is it realistic to think that any independent agency can successfully provide the leadership necessary to eliminate the “systemic risks” that are inherently part of the financial services industry?
